Review : Birdsong – The organic Cafe

“Let’s visit that organic cafe!” are the words of my friend who was keen to try this place, but the funny part was we just knew only so much about it! So on doing some “Zomatoing” we find out the place and we were all excited to visit this place coz we are a bunch of health freaks with a soul of foodie;)

D-day arrived and we finally landed at Bandra, the hub of all the good life, but wait where is this cafe? so this was one of those days where google maps said arrived on location and yet I couldn’t locate the cafe. From opening maps , I finally stuck to opening mouth! And yes I succeeded in finding it. The place is tucked in a bylane opp Mammagato, a small path filled with Graffiti takes you to this Rustic place .

The interiors have got a raw and fresh appeal which spells minimalism. Its got a quaint feel and as you enter you see a showcase with in house bakes and cookie jars. So I had already made up my mind about sampling some. So we ordered “the Green detox smoothie”, “Roast Chicken and toasted sesame” ,”Warm roasted vegetables and feta salad” and Finally my most awaited “Gooey chocolate cake”.

The Green smoothie was refreshing with the right consistency and flavour. It was perfect for the likes of people who are on a DIET! The salads came in next, and for the first time , I found the vegetarian salad more tasty than my chicken one. The warm vegetable salad gets a ‘thumbs up’. The zucchini was grilled to perfection with drizzle of olive oil. Again a very healthy choice! And then the Dessert was a Killer! I loved the gooey chocolate cake coz it had a very succulent sweetness of dates which came in with every bite .A must try for those who are a fan of natural source of sugar.

All in all this place got me disappointed with its location and interiors, and the name got me interested in knowing about thier organic farm but they are 70% organic, so I skipped ordering the coffee. But the “Vegie salad” and off course the “Cake” took away all the may I say “Datey points”!

Must Visit if you are on a strict diet and want to still chill in Bandra. Tough Decision but we made one 🙂

Life’s more than picture perfect!

IMG-20170328-WA0020I will never forget that day when I was told for the first time that” Hey I follow you, and I love your pictures! “That’s when it finally hit me that, Oh God! All that I have been posting all this while is indeed reaching out to so many more people than I can actually imagine and the craziest fact is that once you post it , its forever there! Sometimes I wouldn’t even know which social media has been picked up by the viewer coz I was using all so many. This all went to a point that my personal life was public and everything that I was doing could probably be a part of discussion. I had no intentions of that kind of publicity, but then why was I doing it? Why was I turning a slave to this whole social media platform! I wasn’t even earning money by my popularity coz I aint no celeb and the ones which I was getting were compliments which felt like taunts that dint seem to come from a very good intent.

Also at this point a dear aunt told me that these days you guys are posting all your pix on Social media but do you realize ki posting all the best ones could attract negativity? She used the word “Najar lag ti hai beta”, and let me tell you I’m very much educated and not superstitious but that day I really took her suggestion into consideration and thought over and over again. Yes, it was making sense to me in a prospective that I was indeed attracting unwanted attention more than appreciation and that was something that had begun bothering me. People remember visuals these days more than “kaha suni kahanni” and then gossip. Yes we are always interested in others lives more than ours, wonder why? And then when I took a break to an undisclosed location altogether where I was forcibly cut off from the Net that’s when things became a bit too tough for maybe my so called followers but effortless for me in reality!

I guess our self-worth these days is directly proportional to our likes, follows and no. of friends and without this all we seem to be a failure in our own eyes. I don’t know who is responsible for this but slowly and gradually we have forgotten who we are coz we are constantly busy trying to put up a certain image and making things seem perfect even though they aren’t. We have lost our innocence and every single moment that we should be catching glimpses of each other’s real expressions and guessing what runs on their mind ,instead we are more amazed by  the reaction implicated by random emojis!

I think the “stay connected” attitude has given people the door to open a conversation at any time and any hour without thinking twice whether it’s appropriate or not. Everybody is using the messaging app that used to be earlier only for social purpose has become a networking tool and also a supreme stalking source. Let’s give this a thought and become not superstitious but atleast sensitive and a little empathy would definitely be appreciated!

Makar Sankranti 

Today is the Festival which brings people together to celebrate the beginning of Uttarayan. The Shishir rutu with it’s winter chills is part of The “Aadaan Kaal”. This is the time of the year when the body’s strength or “Bal”, capacity for digestion is at it’s peak. Hence, the “Agni” or digestion capacity is at its best and especially with the drop of temperatures the body strives for heat, that is food converted into energy. 

Sesame seeds and Jaggery is used to make Laddus, chikki and A special stuffed roti. There is a special custom of wishing everyone with a “tilgul”, to forego all bitterness and welcome the sweetness of festivities into our hearts. “Sesamum Indicum” is heaty in nature and is hence apt to overcome the seasonal changes. The oil from these seeds is used for consumption in cooking , as well as an excellent lubricating agent for the body. Hence Oil massages are recommended with this oil.

Makar Sankranti is also the festival of kites, where people of all age groups gather for Kite flying. It is a funfilled activity which goes on for as long as the sunshines. It’s great fun to see so many colourful kites flying high in the sky.

At Home it is a feast of sorts, as we eat the delicious “gul poli”, roti stuffed with jaggery sesame seeds mixture and also a special subji made of the fresh seasonal vegetables called the “Bhogichi bhaaji”. Being a true Foodie, it is the amazing food that keeps me waiting for this festival.

REVIEW : Dessert Garden! 

If you want to visit a place that gives u a slice of all the FB feeds on real goodfood, then there’s a chance you have got! Visit the Dessert garden at High Street Phoenix…

It is a golden opportunity to eat every type of dessert. After reaching there I m sure you will be baffled as to where do I begin, but as you start discovering the stalls you will realise what you really want to try. 

Take your time and stroll around the whole place I know the stalls are really tempting and it is highly impossible to cover each and every stall but if you don’t do that you will end up regretting later! So have a look at the stalls and what they have to cater, begin with something that is totally new to you, experiment at the beginning, because when you just enter you come with an open mind, later on as you keep passing across stalls its highly confusing as to what you want to order.

All the stalls have desserts and savoury anywhere from Rs 100 to 350. So on an average you spend around Rs 200 on every stall. Ideally if you go in a group of friends you can try more things and get a bite of everything, but if that’s not your idea then you can stick to 1 friend and together you could decide for each other.

The Desserts are lined up on the front rows in the beginning and as you proceed inside, the savoury stalls are on one side on the right. There is a huge variety in Ice creams, from sundae stalls to roll ice cream to the delicious candies,my personal favourite. The Desserts have a wide variety, cupcakes,cookies, cake in jar, waffles on stick,i think i saw crepes too, pastries, mousse,and pavlova was the first thing I tried, hadn’t ever heard about it but just because it’s a masterchef recipe I had to sample it. It was fantastic, I had the lemon curd flavour. 

All those sweets will keep you craving for something salty, head to Chips on stick, its got amazing fingerlicking good stuff, i tried zucchini with mexican sprinkle. The pizza in cone was so much fun to watch it get baked and then there are different veg and nonveg fillings, we tried the original, Italiano. If you go to the Ice cream Candy stall you can’t miss thier very own fruit one, it tastes amazing as you eat and lick through tropical fruits. Also if you are too hungry like I was, hit the Hot dog stall, its really filling and tasty. I had the chicken dog. We also tried the banofie cake in jar and it is really delicious. 

After hogging on all this cheat food, I also picked up some healthy snacks to take home. There is one stall selling amazing baked snacks. I picked up herb and cheese makhana & baked pizza sticks. Taste before you buy, there’s ample variety.

Travel Diaries: Romantic Venice 

img_0321Venice is a manmade island! Hard to believe, isn’t it? And all the more because it is a combination of 170 islands and 400 bridges! It is built on the Adriatic Sea with the help of wooden blocks. Legend has it that it all started in the land of Padova, where “Hund”, the king of Hungary had terrorised the people. As this king was good at horsemanship he used to loot the villagers, but very soon they realised that naval force was his weakness. So in a move to save themselves, the villagers relocated to marshy lands.img_0338

We reached the Port Fucina in time for our ride to the epic St. Mark’s Square. The weather was amazing. It was a bright and sunny morning as we set to cruise to Venice. There are water taxis here, to move from one island to another, called “vaporetto . img_0377The cruise was a windy one, although the sun was out, the winter had set in. It was a sight to remember as we neared the beautiful city, monuments and well painted buildings by the banks on both sides. It was another moment of “Clickathon”! No wonder “Napoleon” said the Mark’s Square to be the drawing room of Europe.

While walking on the streets of Venice, the capital of Veneto region there were jingles running through my head, for everything looked so pretty! The gondola, the river, the bridges, the roads, the perfect blue sky and the white – golden structures against it. The difference between the Basilica and the Cathedral was finally understood. Cathedral is the seat of Bishop and Basilica is the place, saint’s body is buried. Here, we saw the Basilica, it had Bronze horses in its structure. These Poles around symbolizes the victory of battles.

img_0416Also there are two granite columns, one is “Winged Lion” the symbol of Venice and the other has St.Theodor slaying a dragon. Both are significant structures at the square. I loved posing around here and the selfie stick actually turned out to be my bestfriend!

Also Romance was totally in the air, saw so many young couples proposing by the Gondola and the Basilica. It was a sweet sight! And personally I felt this place was indeed very dreamy and totally worth falling in love with.

Travel Diaries: Munich to Wattens to Innsbruck!

The tour began after a long flight via Muscat, changeover for Munich. It was freezing as I stepped in Munich. I obviously wasn’t accustomed to these chilly winds since I have been born and brought up in Mumbai. We were taken to an Indian restaurant once we boarded our coach and, from the bus onto the restaurant every step I took was a self reminder that, “Nikhita, you better gear up well, or the winter is going to freeze you for good!”

I would have loved to sip on a chilled beer since it was Germany, and I do know that Octobeer just got over because I made the most of it by experimenting with Beer in my hometown, but here that thought just went off once I started eating the hot indian meal. Our tour manager gave us warm greetings and I couldn’t contain our excitement as we checked in to our Hotel.

The next morning, after a wholesome breakfast, we got onto our coach for an orientation tour of Munich city. The next 10 days our bus was going to be the second home where we were going to spend literally the most time. It was warm and cozy, with reclining seats and windows that gave a very good view.

 We reached our first halt, the Marian square, to see the Madonna statue that is gold plated structure, and Golden Roof next to the church.

It’s rather funny, that everytime I peeped out, there was a moment of Wow! All these Mercs, BMWs,Porches, Audis,Volkswagens, Volvos flooded on roads and rarely anything other than them. It was indeed a treat to keep watching them in abundance, but what also surprised me is that there were different tracks for cyclists. 

We then went to Wattens, to see the Green monster fountain, aka the biggest Swarovski Outlet. Danielle Swarovski invented these crystals and the brand came into play. The showroom is under this monster, and as you step onto a belt you are surrounded by shimmer and dazzle. Among the extravagant displays,the bridal outfits studded with crystals, a beautiful peacock and Disney souvenirs caught my eye.

After that visit, we then headed on to Innsbruck at Austria. The excellent roads were built during Hitler ‘s time and are called Autobahns. These roads even landed planes during world war II. They supposedly don’t have a speed limit. 

The “Inn” in Innsbruck is the name of the river and “bruck” means bridge in German. Along the cobbled stone pathways lies a scenic city with buildings in gothic structures.The Maria Theresien Strasse had a row of shops and cafes around, with beautiful displays where I couldn’t stop posing. There was one boutique which had thier traditional dress, the milkmaid outfit on display along the mugs of bubbling beer. 

The local pubs had a Barrel on thier enterance along with some beautiful floral decor. As we walked along the streets it was early evening, so we saw a lot of street artists,performers, cartoon characters, painters, bubble makers and musicians. They were putting up a good show, and I even had a photoshoot with one such artist. The place had a great vibe and it was really eye pleasing to see it all in the old city charm. 

The crossroads looked attractive too, as buildings were coloured in different shades of pastels in a harmonious manner. This city was a visual treat!

Travel Diaries: Sojourn en Paris

Paris welcomed me with a very homely feeling! The bustle of a city full of life. My day began with a scrumptious breakfast of Pancakes, croissant, pudding, cakes, coffee and so much more, but all I really wanted was to see the eiffel tower. 

Couldn’t wait anymore, and so we left for the once a wonder of the world. This tower was built as a temporary structure for the world exhibition in the year 1888, and it was only made for 5 months. Later it was decided to be restored and this wasn’t appreciated by the locals initially. They disliked the structure because they viewed it as inappropriate with the old charm of the city. An antenna was installed on it during world war II and till date its height is 130 meters. It is made up of iron and steel. 

After reaching, we got a ticket and got into the que for an elevator which takes you to the different levels. We went upto second floor which gives you a beautiful view of Paris city. All the monuments can be seen in miniatures. It was a moment of “Clickathon”! 

We then went to a café, I saw a beautiful display of Macaroons. I was really tempted to pick up some, but to my shock one macaroon was for 1.90€. I held back myself, because I am not very fond of Macaroons, I have tasted it back home but I will definitely pick up some if I get it at a better price, maybe I just wasn’t tempted enough. 

PARIS city tour awaited us next. It was also time to know all about the Perfumes at the Fragonard perfumery. Here there was the distillery of olden days and bottles of different shapes and sizes. A whole museum was dedicated to perfume making and it smelled like flowerbeds! The variety of perfumes were made out of essential oils and each had its distinct concoctions. We were given a whiff of thier top 6 scents and I honestly got so confused that I ended up picking nothing but it was indeed a learning experience as I learnt about the kind of fragrances I identify myself with.

Our city tour guide joined us in, and we then scanned the streets of Paris. The grand brands at Champs de Elyss, to name a few Loius Vittoun, Channel, Cartier, Bvlgari, it had it all. We then passed under Arc de Triumph, which is at a height of 50 metres. 

The city seemed to be in its all glamorous avatar as the sun set and we got ready for our Cruise on river sienne. 

It was all glittering as we passed by the monuments on both sides of the bank. Eiffel tower is one structure which can be spotted from everywhere in the heart of the city. As the division is according to the river, eiffel is on Left bank. It was illuminated and on our way back we say the champagne lights. It is a treat to see the Eiffel at night because it is so much more in a city that is all about Love! Paris, I promise to the Eiffel that I will visit you again when Love finds me. Till then I will take inspiration from the energy that’s bustling around me, for I love the idea of Love!

The day ended on a high note as I saw the carousal,Rue de Paris that is a ferries wheel and the opera house.
