Review : Birdsong – The organic Cafe

“Let’s visit that organic cafe!” are the words of my friend who was keen to try this place, but the funny part was we just knew only so much about it! So on doing some “Zomatoing” we find out the place and we were all excited to visit this place coz we are a bunch of health freaks with a soul of foodie;)

“Let’s visit that organic cafe!” are the words of my friend who was keen to try this place, but the funny part was we just knew only so much about it! So on doing some “Zomatoing” we find out the place and we were all excited to visit this place coz we are a bunch of health freaks with a soul of foodie;)

D-day arrived and we finally landed at Bandra, the hub of all the good life, but wait where is this cafe? so this was one of those days where google maps said arrived on location and yet I couldn’t locate the cafe. From opening maps , I finally stuck to opening mouth! And yes I succeeded in finding it. The place is tucked in a bylane opp Mammagato, a small path filled with Graffiti takes you to this Rustic place .

The interiors have got a raw and fresh appeal which spells minimalism. Its got a quaint feel and as you enter you see a showcase with in house bakes and cookie jars. So I had already made up my mind about sampling some. So we ordered “the Green detox smoothie”, “Roast Chicken and toasted sesame” ,”Warm roasted vegetables and feta salad” and Finally my most awaited “Gooey chocolate cake”.

The Green smoothie was refreshing with the right consistency and flavour. It was perfect for the likes of people who are on a DIET! The salads came in next, and for the first time , I found the vegetarian salad more tasty than my chicken one. The warm vegetable salad gets a ‘thumbs up’. The zucchini was grilled to perfection with drizzle of olive oil. Again a very healthy choice! And then the Dessert was a Killer! I loved the gooey chocolate cake coz it had a very succulent sweetness of dates which came in with every bite .A must try for those who are a fan of natural source of sugar.

All in all this place got me disappointed with its location and interiors, and the name got me interested in knowing about thier organic farm but they are 70% organic, so I skipped ordering the coffee. But the “Vegie salad” and off course the “Cake” took away all the may I say “Datey points”!

Must Visit if you are on a strict diet and want to still chill in Bandra. Tough Decision but we made one 🙂

#TREK#KALSUBAI the tale with a twist!

DSC_0559

The trek was a bit steep and quite slippery at times but the real adrenaline rush was getting a grip through it all. It was a long one but that feeling when we finally made it to the top after crossing over scary ladders and streams was mind blowing, to the extent that the winds were blowing so fast that we thought we could fly! I felt so full of life at that moment, it was as if I was stepping in heaven and was floating on the clouds,Yes! It was so insane! It was peaceful and just so beautiful that I’m falling short of words. We were literally on top of the mountain if not the world, at 5400 Ft above sea level!

DSC_0545

As we began to head down, we saw a stall selling hot bhajjiyas and chai. We celebrated our victory over the most amazing plate of bhajjiyas which we polished off in minutes. I could have eaten some more but the way down was a challenging one, so I resisted the craving and we continued down. As I was marking my way down and putting each foot in a planned manner so as to not slip, there were many instances when I thought would stumble maybe but I kept going. I think this holds true even in life, we can take precautions, plan and then act but sometimes the fall is the place where the rise begins.

After hours of the steep way down, as we reached base site I was at my hungriest best! I have never had such a huge appetite, maybe it was the simplicity and freshness of the hot food served or the hard work that we put in, but I haven’t eaten so much even at the grandest of buffets! The typical Maharashtrian fare with Matki ussal, a subji, hot chapatti, varan bhaat the comfort food of all maharashtrains and the yummy Shrikhand, which took away all my fatigue. I was at my messiest best self, in my most rugged avatar and now it was time to get ready for heading back home! With zero network, and nil social media, it was a delight to see people interact face to face. I made some new friends and the journey was one to remember!

No that isn’t the end of it all! There is more awaiting you as we head back. Had we gone home comfortably by the private bus, we wouldn’t have remembered this day much. It was a rainy day and the bus got stuck in the mud. All tactics like raising the engine, giving it a push and also getting a tractor to pull out the bus was employed but to no avail. It was getting chilly as the sun dropped down. I was getting worried for I had to head to work the next morning. But there was clearly no sign of a way home. Fortunately my friend’s service provider came to our aid, for she found coverage to make a round of calls home. Everyone was anxious, worried and upset about the mishap. To top it all it was raining heavily and continuously back home. At one point I really thought we would have to stay back in the village. And then a ray of hope shone! A taxi was arranged to head to Kasara station from where we were to catch the local train. Now we had a challenge ahead of us, for we had to get into the last local to Kasara or we would be stuck up and it was already late evening. My friend who had got injured was given priority and we quickly got into the packed vehicle for station. I really don’t know how we reached there, because the roads were very scary, it was dark, raining and all foggy. There was literally zero visibility to my vision. I was petrified but I had to show a strong front to my friend who was already in pain as she had an injury. I’m sure our driver had some super powers that he took us safely. We thanked our stars for we reached in time for the train. Although we had never travelled on that route all we knew that we had to head back home anyhow. This was the time when I befriended the crushes friend. Soon we realized that we were heading home to the same suburb! There was major bonding that helped to ease the nerves. Now for a matter of fact we knew we were safe and then we finally managed to reach home!

Yes, I went straight to work the next day! I do take my job very seriously but breaks like this fuel the person I am! Cant wait for another shot of madness!

P.s. Thank You AJ for making this happen! This couldnt have been a better break and especially to embark our Friendship of 13 years,& still counting…

#TREK#KALSUBAI

It’s been long, since I was dreaming about this day, it was harder to believe when I was finally living it away. It had been planned long in advance and I was typically excited a lot, for it was a day with my chosen one with whom I grew up all along. My school bestie was accompanying me! The girl I share all my wild madness with, my moments of pain and equal joy! With whom I have experienced my first streak of solid adventure as a Kid when we did River Rafting and now we were all grown up, so have our endeavors!  Taking out time from our busy schedules when we meet, our greets and farewell are no less then long lost lovers. Time and the distance have only strengthened our bond because in days of Skype and whatsapp we never seemed to have lost our track.

The day arrived and we finally got set with our rucksack for the super adventure! We were equipped with every small necessity and a bumper pack of energy. As we assembled at the meeting point we saw so many new faces that were a part of our trekking group. I could feel the vibes as they were an equally excited lot. And guess what?!  I had already found myself a crush after a bit of scanning and I could obviously not hide the hint of blush.  After school days I had probably not got that silly feeling but I guess now I had gone back to being the same girl I was in secondary. It felt just like school when she used to tell me what to do and what not to. It was certainly a walk down the memory lane. We got into the bus and headed for the overnight journey to the base camp. It was continuous giggles and chatter, for we had to catch up on life and off course the Gossip! We fell asleep when the energy zonked over and a sigh of relief was probably given by trespassers. It was drizzling as we reached the base site. We got ready for the intensive trek to the highest peak of Maharashtra.

There is something so addictive about the rains, that I never really get enough of this season. Especially when in nature the effect is all the more drawing. I was mesmerized by the view of the mountains engulfed by clouds. It was foggy, chilly and lush green. I had to start clicking! So I did, and caught up on the before dawn glory. It was so peaceful and unlike the daily grind of life that I couldn’t help but feel the gush of the Mother Nature. That’s when I exactly remembered that,”We travel because distance and difference are the secret tonic to creativity. When we get home, home is still the same but something inside our minds has changed and that makes all the difference”.

there’s more coming… next part on its way! Wait for it… Until then let me know if you have a similar story, please comment and share it if you like it.Truly grateful and keep that soul alive!

‘As I dwell in my shell ‘

I am extremely sorry for not being as regular! I guess I had my own short comings and I m sure you will be willing to forgive me for the same! I am just as caught up as everyone is, but now I have made a promise to myself to make it a point to blog once a month and catch up as often as possible.

Last month was all about “the Yoga International day” and so much about it that I am sure you all must be still hungover! But you know what, the real essence of Yog lies in the people who hardly need an introduction because its engraved so deep within that one look at them and you can’t help but get inspired.

In a world where we are suffering because of our wrong lifestyle choices, ailments are a definite outcome but “Yoga has the answers for its prevention and cure”. So when I got an opportunity to attend a seminar where Doctors and Yoga experts from around the country had gathered to put forward thier line of yogic treatment I just couldn’t miss it. These are the people who practice yog to cure ailments, the amount of research and experience they have is only believable after you encounter them.

As these experts spoke for themselves and thier school of thoughts, they also supported one anothers views for there was one thread that connected them all, and that was “Yog”. It helped in looking at yoga from not only a perspective of health and fitness but “a shift in the way of living”. Its not just the body but a practise of “Complete awareness” of the mind and soul as I put it in their own words.

The location of the venue was so serene that a field of positivity was around. The food that was given was also “sattvik” and therefore a feeling of calm had set in.

As we came towards the end of the event, we knew we were going to return with a happy but a heavy heart as the place was soo inviting. It’s hard to not fall an impact after meeting so many yogis in person and to sum it all up they all said “Make Yoga a way of Life!”.

‘Breathe -n- keep peace ‘

There are days when you feel so stuck up that all you need is a moment of liberation! Yah, I am talking of those days which seem unending, and you literally drag yourself through them. We all go through these tough times but what really keeps us going is the piece of cake on the other side of the bridge. Yes I am looking forward to this and that! Have you ever noticed how fast time goes when you actually have something going on at the back of your head and you literally can’t wait until you get there. That could mean just about anything from meeting an old friend to attending that concert you always dreamed of, no matter how the meeting with that friend goes or how fabulous or not the concert was, the feeling of fulfilment is far big and starts to fill up on all the empty spaces of waiting for that moment.

Happiness is a very subjective word and varies from an individual to another. The day you begin to embrace it in the smallest of things, it lifts you and keeps you floating. The dreamy state remains for as long as you want, and it is knocked out very often by the daily grind but don’t you think it did be really wonderful if we could get in touch with ourselves at the end of each day. Our much needed “peace of mind” is the best remedy to all our problems. If we are at peace with ourselves we are better guarded to deal with the world.

Chanting is a practise that I have taken up after much research and discussion. I believe that every new practice that you start has a timing and a reason to take up, when you find yours you will voluntarily start. No amount of hammering really works, “inspiration and faith” are the biggest rolemodels in shaping our life. “Wisdom cannot be taught, it is ensued”.

TIP: Pick up those beads and make the most of them today. Chanting is not religious, it is a means of liberation.

‘Sleeping beauty, where’s you?’

“I am a night person! “ I’m sure there’s a whole group of people nodding in agreement.  Now isn’t this like just the perfect tagline to escape from the fact that we don’t find enough time or energy during the day and turns out the night with its sense of tranquil inspires us in different ways, but have you really thought what kind of havoc is that causing to your body? We love ourselves, don’t we?  We live life on our terms but, hey! do you really think those terms are going to be your loyalist when it comes to your health and wellbeing. I’m sorry to tell but you are causing self harm! You probably don’t drink, you probably don’t smoke, you probably don’t pile up on junk and you probably are trying to do all things right in your own little ways but are still wondering what is it that’s going so wrong? Why am I not reaping good health? Ever thought if your lifestyle is right?

A Lifestyle isn’t really about all the things fancy but a life which suits you just right. Ayurveda is the science of Life and you would be amused to know that although its an ancient science its laws still hold true. In the fast life we have somewhere forgotten our basic needs, in which “Nidra” or Sleep holds a lot of importance. It’s the least spoken aspect in our regime but in the Ayurvedic  refrences it has been mentioned that its lack can cause great peril. If you think that you catch sleep over the weekends, then that extra sleep holds no value because it isn’t going to fill up for all those days of the week when the harm is already done. It ain’t  just the number of hours that you sleep but also the time and place that makes a whole lot of difference.

Ideally the sleep should be completed during the night, so as to wake up early before the sunrise and answer nature’s call. This practice in itself cures and prevents a lot of diseases. Sleeping during the day should be avoided and if need arises then the individual must sleep before lunchtime for a period exactly half of which he missed previous night. Sleeping during the day is discouraged in all seasons except for “Grishma” or summer and in those individuals who do strenuous physical work are an exception. Also it is very normal to feel sleepy after  consuming food, but try catching sleep while in sitting position, maybe on a rocking chair or head on desk .This way you get the benefits of sleep without causing a disturbance in the tridoshas which could be compared as the cause for obesity and also disturbance in the levels of hormones due to erratic sleep hours. So instead of making excuses, sleep on time and sufficiently to experience a healthy you!

TIP: Make the most of your lunch hour and take that short power nap on your desk. It will definitely recharge you on a hectic day.

‘OIL-the-TOIL’

My grandmother always ran behind me for oiling my hair and as a kid I always wondered why was it so important. At school where oil in hair was compulsory, was such a curse that I am sure all of us looked forward to getting rid of rules. Once in college the oiling became a rare sight, for fashion and looking good took centre stage. Such is the situation with most of us, until some survey or a person of great expertise enlightens us with the truth.

There’s always been a controversy about whether to oil or not but if you ask me then Ayurvedic texts have mentioned the importance of Oil and massage. Application of oil to body, foot and external orifices like nose, ear, eye each have different effects. Our body is a machine that we literally use everyday, sometimes overused, sometimes underused or sometimes abused. Don’t you think we should take care of it so that it supports us well for the longest time?

The “shir abhyanga” or head massage is beneficial in improving our reflexes by directly stimulating the sense organs. It makes the hair indeed stronger, longer and thicker. “Karna puran” or oiling the ear is therapeutic in relieving neck and jaw stiffness, done after sunset. “Pad Abhyanga” or foot massage done with oil releases the build up tension in the body, enhances vision, lubricates and strengthens them.

A very fine example of watering the tree to keep it nurturing has been compared with oil for the body. It’s effects are noteworthy if continued in the long run. Sesame oil is preferred option as it is easily available and also has the properties to enhance health. Now you know why should always listen to your elders😉

TIP: Forget expensive pedicures, Massage feet with oil before you retire for the day starting from today and make it a daily practise.
